West Region OPP laid over 1,300 speeding charges Thanksgiving weekend

OPP West Region members laid the most speeding and impaired charges of any region policed by the OPP over the course of the "Operation Impact" Thanksgiving long weekend traffic campaign.

OPP West Region members laid the most speeding and impaired charges of any region policed by the OPP over the course of the "Operation Impact" Thanksgiving long weekend traffic campaign. 

Officers from OPP West Region's 13 detachments laid a total of 2,217 charges for a variety of infractions after making 2427 traffic stops over the course of the campaign, which ran from Oct. 6-9.

The campaign focused on the leading bad driving behaviours that contribute to death, injury and property damage on Ontario roads and highways.

The "big four" include speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving, and impaired driving. 

Over the course of the weekend, OPP West Region officers laid 1,386 speeding charges, 46 charges for failing to wear a seatbelt, 16 distracted driving charges, and 45 impaired driving charges.

West Region members also charged 26 individuals with Stunt Driving/Racing.

"Operation Impact" is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, in support of "Canada's Road Safety Strategy."
