Looking for an exciting way to support your community? Now’s your chance.

There’s still time to sign up for the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s (WRPS) seventh annual Polar Plunge and make a difference.

The Polar Plunge, a signature provincial event of the Law Enforcement Torch Run initiative benefiting Special Olympics Ontario, will be held on March 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at WRPS headquarters on 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge.

So far this year, WRPS has raised nearly $15,000 of its $60,000 fundraising goal. Proceeds from the plunge will support Special Olympics Ontario and thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities across Canada.

Close to 80 plungers have already registered to get Freezin’ for a Reason, including several WRPS members. Plungers are also able to register at the event on March 1.

“The Waterloo Regional Police Service is honoured to stand behind the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Ontario through events like the Polar Plunge,” said Mark Crowell, Chief of Police.

“This event brings our community together in a meaningful way, and we encourage everyone to participate, whether by taking the plunge or showing your support from the sidelines.”

Plungers can personalize their experience this year by choosing a walk-up song before taking the plunge. Participants can also enjoy hot chocolate, access to a hot tub to warm up, and opportunities to win exciting fundraising prizes.

For the first time this year, WRPS has introduced the Waterloo Region Cool Schools Program to encourage high school students, teachers, and staff to get Freezin’ for a Reason. Students and staff register for a Cool School Plunge and fundraise in support of Special Olympics Ontario through a friendly school-based competition. Student groups/teams can compete against each other or challenge another school. This is a great opportunity to create school engagement and give back to the community in a unique way, teaching students the importance of inclusion. Click here to learn more about the Cool Schools Program or sign up.

Plunge, pledge, or sponsor - every little bit goes a long way in making a difference in the lives of Special Olympics Ontario athletes.
