Police are urging Cambridge residents to lock their vehicles after responding to a string of thefts in Preston over the last two weeks.

Between Feb. 7 and 18, Waterloo regional police say they received 20 reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles.

The thefts occurred during the overnight and early morning hours.

In one incident, on Feb. 10, a garage door opener was stolen from a vehicle on Pheasant Avenue around 6 a.m. and was used to open the garage door of a residence. The culprit took various items including power tools and a leaf blower.

Other items targeted in these incidents included cash, wallets, electronics, identity documents, and fragrances.

On Feb. 18, officers arrested a 30-year-old man in connection to three thefts from motor vehicle incidents – one on Bishop Street South and two on Clare Avenue. Stolen property included a laptop, cell phones, and bank cards. All items were recovered.

The man was charged with possession of stolen goods under $5,000 and possession of an identity document and held in police custody for a bail hearing.

The investigation into the other 17 incidents remains ongoing.

Police encourage vehicle owners to park in a secure location where possible, lock vehicle doors, and ensure that valuables are not left in plain sight.

Please report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood to police immediately. If possible, try to obtain a description and direction of travel of the suspect and/or vehicle.
