UPDATED Police say deceased driver ran red before hitting tanker

An 80-year-old Cambridge woman died following a collision this morning on Eagle Street North and Concession Street

Waterloo regional police recently opened the intersection of Eagle Street North, Concession Road and Speedsville Road after a morning collision involving a transport truck and a car.

Police said at approximately 9:20 a.m. emergency crews responded to the area, prompting the closure of the intersection for several hours.

Police said a Mazda sedan travelling on Concession Road went through the intersection, against a red traffic light signal, and struck a transport truck travelling on Eagle Street North.

The driver of the Mazda, an 80-year-old female from Cambridge, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lesley Jarvis and a group of friends were out to eat at the Family Diner on the corner of Eagle Street and Concession Street when they pulled in and saw what had happened.

"That car got hit so hard it was pushed all the way over there," said Jarvis as she pointed to the parking lot of the mechanic shop on the corner.

"It's just terrible," she said.

After a preliminary investigation, no charges are expected to be laid and the transport truck driver did not sustain any physical injuries.

All area roadways have reopened.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the collision or have dash camera video footage to call the Traffic Services Unit at 519-570-9777, extension 8856.
