Cambridge man with hatchet arrested outside Kitchener mall

Waterloo Regional Police have arrested a local man after responding to a weapons incident at a shopping mall in Kitchener on Saturday.

At around 7:50 p.m., police responded to Fairview Park Mall for reports of a male brandishing a weapon.

Officers determined that a male had entered a store acting erratically and carrying a hatchet.

Officers located and arrested the male outside the mall, police said in a news release.

After an investigation, a 30-year-old Cambridge man was charged with:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Fail to comply with a release order
  • Obstruct a police officer

He was also arrested on two outstanding warrants.

No physical injuries were reported as a result of this incident, police said.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
