A section of Roseville Road, just west of city limits, will be closed to through traffic starting today, for approximately 10 days, so the Region of Waterloo can install a wildlife crossing near Barrie's Lake.

The $409,000 project to install directional fencing and a wildlife tunnel under the road will allow the safe crossing of turtles and other wildlife known to live in the adjacent wetlands.

It's the third wildlife crossing the region has installed since 2018. Since installing two of three corridors, road mortalities have decreased by 79 per cent.

Waterloo Region, species include painted turtles, Blanding’s Turtle, and Snapping Turtles.

A project underway by rare Charitable Research Reserve is also protecting local turtle populations.

The detour around the closure is Edworthy Side Road – Cedar Creek Road – St. Andrews Street – George Street South – Blair Road.

Bismark Drive and Queensbrook Crescent will remain accessible via Blair Road.

Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Paramedics) and Student Transportation Services have been notified of the construction, closures and detours to minimize any disruptions to services.
