On Friday, June 14, 2024, from 5 to 10 p.m., the streets around City Hall and Civic Square at 50 Dickson Street will celebrate local arts and culture. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Cambridge Celebration of the Arts, which brings together the city’s finest performing, visual, and literary arts.
Megan Hooper, recreation coordinator for special events at the City of Cambridge and staff liaison of the event’s organizing committee, shares her excitement about this landmark occasion.
“This festival is a staple in our community,” she explains. “It’s a day where we celebrate the enormous talent we have right here in Cambridge.”
The event has evolved significantly since its inception, continuously expanding to include a broader array of talents and experiences. This year, attendees can look forward to a re-introduction of local restaurant food vendors and an expanded selection of market vendors.
“It's an opportunity not just to enjoy great art but also to savour the tastes of local cuisine,” Hooper adds.
A highlight for this year is the final act, "Listen to the Music: Ultimate Tribute to the Doobie Brothers," promising to end the evening on a high note. The Cambridge Fire Hall Museum will also open its doors to visitors during the event, offering a slice of local history alongside cultural festivities.
The celebration will feature three stages: the Main Stage in Civic Square, the Market Stage facing the farmers' market, and a stage inside City Hall in the Atrium dedicated to literary and performing artists. Each stage will host performances from local singers, dancers, bands, orchestras, and choirs, as well as poetry readings, spoken word, and visual art displays.
“The impact on our community is incredibly positive,” Hooper reflects. “This event not only showcases our local artists but also brings our community together in celebration of arts and culture. It gives our local talent and vendors a fantastic platform and enriches our cultural fabric.”
Looking to the future, the Cambridge Celebration of the Arts committee is already brainstorming ways to enhance next year’s event, ensuring that it remains a beloved tradition for many more years to come.
Cambridge residents and art lovers are warmly invited to partake in this festive occasion. Mark your calendars for an evening of art, music, and community spirit. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this event is a perfect opportunity to engage with the arts and support local talent.
