A strong start to the 2024-25 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League season has earned former Cambridge Hawk forward Jordan Charron an Ontario Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Charron, a 2023 sixth round pick of the Greyhounds, had nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points in 18 games with the Ayr Centennials this season before agreeing to terms with the team.
During his rookie season in the GOJHL in 2023-24 he participated in the Top Prospects Game and produced six goals and 13 assist in 39 games.
“We’ve been closely following Jordan’s development since we drafted him, and we’ve been thoroughly impressed by his progress," Greyhounds general manager Kyle Raftis said in a release on the team's website.
"His strong start with the Ayr Centennials, under the leadership of Jeff Grimwood and Cody Hall, has shown that he’s ready to take the next step in his game. With his combination of speed, size, and skill, we believe Jordan has the potential to make a significant impact in the OHL. We’re excited to officially welcome him to the Greyhounds and add him to our forward group."
In his U16 AAA season in Cambridge prior to the draft, Charron scored 10 goals and added 13 assists in 33 games.
The Ayr native has also committed to St. Lawrence University in the NCAA, a decision that would have kept him from playing in the OHL until recent rule changes came into effect that allows major junior hockey players to play US college hockey. Due to receiving a monthly stipend, players in the OHL, Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League were previously deemed ineligible by the NCAA.
"I’m truly looking forward to being a part of the Soo Greyhounds organization and community," Charron said in the release.
"Personally I would like to thank the Ayr Centennials organization for all they have done for me. I would like to thank my Advisor Rob Stewart for all his guidance and support. I also would like to thank my family for all their encouragement and dedication to get me where I am today. I’m looking forward to being a Hound.”
Charron made his debut on Sunday in a 2-1 win over the Windsor Spitfires.
The Greyhounds return to action on Thursday when they travel to St. Catharines to play the Niagara IceDogs.
