A 22-year-old commercial vehicle driver from Cambridge is facing multiple charges under the Highway Traffic Act after being stopped by Wellington County OPP yesterday.
Police say on Feb. 11, at around 10:30 a.m., officers were performing a proactive traffic enforcement initiative and initiated a traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle on Wellington Road 7 within Elora.
As a result of the investigation, they charged a Cambridge driver with failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report and operating a commercial motor vehicle with no valid Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration certificate
The accused was also given warnings under the Highway Traffic Act for failing to surrender an inspection schedule, driving a vehicle with an improper braking system, driving a vehicle with a major defect and driving without a current, valid permit.
Police say commercial motor vehicle (CMV) collisions carry unique risks. Due to the size and weight of these large vehicles, when they are involved in a collision - especially on a highway - the outcome can be catastrophic. CMVs can weigh more than 60,000 kg. (132,277 lbs).
When combined with speeds ranging from 80 to 105 km/h, these vehicles generate significant momentum and energy, giving them the potential to cause extensive loss of life, injuries and property damage. The OPP recognizes that there are many safe, responsible CMV drivers who contribute to safe roads in Ontario.
