A driver has been charged with dangerous driving after a striking worker was struck by a vehicle near the Waterloo Region International Airport last night.
Waterloo regional police were called to the airport around 7:40 p.m. after the pedestrian who was part of a planned protest at Fountain Street North and Airport Road, was hit by the vehicle as it proceeded past the protesters.
There were no reports of any physical injuries.
The driver was stopped by police and arrested for dangerous driving.
The strike began yesterday after workers with CUPE Local 1656 were unable to reach an agreement with the Region of Waterloo. Picketers set up near the entrance airport early Monday morning and police have advised drivers not going to the airport to avoid the area.
Flight operations have not been affected by the strike.
WRPS’ Police Liaison Team say they continue to work with members of the protesting group to ensure all demonstrations are carried through safely and peacefully.
