Police warn of spike in rental fraud reports as students return

Common scam involving fake rental listings targeting students returning to local post-secondary schools

A spike in rental fraud investigations targeting students has Waterloo regional police offering tips on how not to fall victim to the fake-listing scam.

Police recommend renters avoid verbal agreements and make sure everything is well documented and you have a copy.

Also visit the property before you agree to rent it to make sure the listing is real and the photos provided online aren't faked.

Use only bank cheques, money orders, or bank e-transfers after a legitimate rental agreement is made.

When signing the lease agreement, do not provide confidential information, such as social insurance number and banking information to avoid identity theft.

Use online search options to do your research on the property and don't ever feel pressured to make a decision.
