A 30-year-old man from Cambridge is facing impaired driving charges after police said a Good Samaritan called to report a driver on Highway 401 was driving erratically and was likely impaired.

Ontario Provincial Police located the vehicle in question around 2:55 p.m. on Sept. 13 westbound on Highway 401 near the 93-kilometer marker in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

While speaking to the driver, the investigating officer observed signs of impairment and administered a standard field sobriety test.

The driver tested poorly and was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, a Cambridge man was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

The man was hit with a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Chatham on Sept. 30.

The OPP thanks the individual who contacted police and reported this incident. As a direct result, officers were able to safely locate the vehicle and take the driver into custody.

The OPP reminds motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive and urges motorists to report suspected impaired drivers immediately.
