Assault charges laid in dispute between island neighbours

Two residents of Waterloo region, including one from Cambridge, have been charged after police were called over reports of assaults taking place on an island in Georgian Bay.

Police said a 911 call came in at around 10:25 a.m. on July 2 from Roberts Island, Georgian Bay Township, where a resident reported a number of assaults with a weapon had just occurred.

Police from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP along with the OPP Marine Unit responded and began an investigation of an assault between neighbours involving a baseball bat, police said in a news release.

Following an investigation, ,police charged a 22-year-old Kitchener man with three counts of assault with a weapon and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

A 20-year-old Cambridge man was charged with two counts of  assault with a weapon.

Both accused were served with notices under the Trespass to Property Act and have been released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 31.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
