Vandalism at two Cambridge parks temporarily closes facilities

Damage to Riverside Park Accessible Playground can't be repaired until dry weather returns

An accessible playground at Riverside Park remains closed this week while the city waits for the return of dry weather to make repairs.

Sometime last week, vandals tore a five-foot section of rubber matting from the Riverside Park playground, creating an unsafe condition that forced city officials to close and fence off the play structure after concerns were raised about safety.

City officials say the timeline of the closure is unknown since specialty repair work to the rubberized surface requires dry conditions.

In the meantime, the city is asking for patience as it waits for a dry day in the forecast and urges everyone to keep out of the fenced enclosure. The playground will be reopened upon completion and full curing of the rubber work.

In an email response to CambridgeToday, manager of parks and recreation operations for the city Chris Ziemski said vandals also burned a small portion of the cricket mat at Studiman Park a few weeks ago, forcing the closure until repairs can be made.

The cricket pitch on Trico Drive was home to the Lancers Cricket Club, which is waiting for the city to find a new home for the sport after neighbours expressed concern about the ball entering backyards.

Garry Sahota, president of the Lancers, said he was told July 22 was the ciy's target date to move the cricket mat to another location and he doesn't expect the club to be playing in Studiman Park again.

The city has yet to name a new home for the 26-member team's shortened season, which runs through September.
