When an invitation to a special occasion arrives, many of us think, “What will I wear?” We want to look and feel our best for these moments.

Gunit Kaur created Gunit’s Boutique to fill a niche in Guelph. The boutique offers a wide range of traditional South Asian wear, Indian fashion, fusion outfits, and Western clothing, along with custom tailoring and alterations.

“We aim to be the go-to destination for high-quality, culturally significant clothing not found elsewhere in the area,” says the shop owner.

The store met with success quickly and celebrated its one-year anniversary in October.

The talented designer, tailor, and seamstress started her business in 2016 in New Delhi, under the same brand name and logo. She says, “I’ve been doing this since childhood. I designed dresses in college at my mother’s boutique in Patiala City, India. My forefathers were also in the fabric business, so knowledge of fabric is in my genes.”

“Our clients appreciate our attention to detail, creative approach, and commitment to quality, whether it’s an alteration or a bespoke outfit designed from scratch.”

Special occasion and everyday wear

The boutique offers comprehensive service for a wedding or formal event, including fabric selection, designing, intricate embroidery, custom tailoring, and fitting. “Whether it’s a bridal gown, bridesmaids’ attire, or traditional outfits for weddings and cultural celebrations, we collaborate with our clients to craft pieces that honour their heritage and style,” says Gunit.

Sometimes customers can’t find ready-to-wear items in their size or preferred fabric. Others have a unique design in mind and need help bringing it to life. In some cases, they aren’t sure what they want and are happy to let Gunit create something special for them.

Shoppers can find a wide range of women’s wear across 17 categories, including tops, pants, fusion wear, Western wear, Pakistani suits, lehengas, sarees, wedding dresses, women’s dresses, jumpsuits, kids wear, and men’s kurta pajama sets. Accessories such as laces, scarves, and phulkari are available.

She is excited to share the store’s upcoming seasonal collection and promotions, featuring exclusive designs for weddings and festive occasions.

Incredible fabrics

The right fabric can make or break an outfit. Gunit stocks a wide selection, from traditional South Asian textiles to modern Western materials. She can recommend the best ones for specific clothing types.

“Choosing the right material is essential for the garment’s look, longevity, and comfort. We guide our customers through these choices to help them make informed decisions that enhance their style and comfort.”

Custom sewing and alterations

“Properly tailored or altered garments ensure they complement the body’s shape and provide the best fit,” she says.

Their expert alteration services are available for garments purchased in-store or brought in from elsewhere by customers. While this work is usually done for special occasion garments, it can be done for everyday clothing too.

Shoppers often come with questions—and that’s encouraged! Many ask about how long the process takes, which garments are customizable, and fittings.

“Every outfit should fit perfectly and match the customer’s style, which can be challenging with off-the-rack clothing. These services allow clients to express their individuality, as we can adjust everything from the fit to the fabric to create a unique look. This is especially valuable for unique body types, special occasions, and traditional outfits, where precision and quality make a big difference,” says Gunit.

Gunit is committed to engaging with the local community. She and her staff have participated in many cultural events that celebrate diversity in Guelph, including:
