A truck fire caused explosions that rocked the encampment near the Dundas Street North overpass early this morning.
Just before 8 a.m., Cambridge Fire Department and Waterloo Regional Police Services responded to a fire at the encampment on private property adjacent to Samuelson Street.
Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and are reporting no injuries at this time.
Video provided by residents of the encampment, shows the truck sitting in the middle of the lot completely engulfed in flames.
Brian Kitchen was listening to music early this morning when he saw the flames pouring out of the truck.
"I saw everything," said Kitchen, standing on the balcony of his homemade shelter.
"This guy was checking the place out, because he was going to bring in his trailer and live here. Now I don't think he's going to be living anywhere."
Kitchen said people in the camp have been using a new type of fentanyl that causes them to fall asleep and if the owner of the truck fell asleep with a torch on, he likely didn't escape.
"I watched the whole thing and I didn't see him get out," he said. "No one knows where he is and you'd think that if his truck were still here, so would he."
Police who were on the scene could not confirm if there was any evidence of human remains inside the truck and said they were not investigating any deaths.
At the time of this article's publication, the owner of the vehicle has not been located.
CFD platoon chief Steve MacDonald added that the fire was so intense that explosions could be heard as the tires popped and the gas tank erupted.
Clean-up is underway as police continue their investigation into the cause of the fire.
