Grand River Transit (GRT) is reminding community members to stay safe around tracks and trains during Rail Safety Week, Sept. 23 to 29.

To highlight the importance of rail safety, GRT is releasing a short video showing examples of poor safety decisions made around ION light rail trains and tracks by motorists and pedestrians.

“ION light rail is now in its fifth year of service, and unfortunately we continue to see incidents around ION involving motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” said Colleen James, Regional Councillor and Chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee. “We’re reminding everyone to be careful, be alert and stay safe around ION.”

The messages around rail safety are simple:

  • Don’t drive, stop or park on the tracks.
  • Only cross at designated crossings.
  • Never go around or under barriers when lights are flashing. Wait for the signals to stop, and the barrier to be completely up before crossing.
  • Follow signs and signals.

The video has been posted to GRT’s social media pages, including YouTube, X/Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
