The City of Cambridge is getting some help from the federal government to add an interactive light installation to this year's Winterfest.
The city was selected for the My Main Street Community Activator initiative to bring a new light installation, e/motion to City Hall’s Civic Square.
Beginning November 22 through December 22, visitors of all ages can feel like a kid again by visiting City Hall Civic Square and riding e/motion.
Intended to evoke memories of a childhood seesaw, e/motion is a playful interactive installation that invites you to dive into the joys and sensations of surging water. Created by Olivier Landreville in collaboration with Serge Maheu, e/motion uses light, sound, and motion to delight riders and bystanders alike, creating an engaging experience to draw visitors to the downtown core.
“We're always looking for ways to make Winterfest bigger and better for Cambridge residents to enjoy," said Matt Cuthbert, the city's manager of special events in a press release.
He said support from My Main Street, the Canadian Urban Institute and the Government of Canada, is allowing the city "to inject a wave of excitement into the downtown core."
Created by artist Olivier Landreville, e/motion invites visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in an experience – one that moves, shifts, and encourages everyone to connect and be inspired by the dance of light and feeling that is e/motion.
“Main streets are at the social and economic heart of community life in cities and towns across southern Ontario," said Mary W. Rowe, CEO and President, Canadian Urban Institute, in the release.
"They mobilize social capital to generate economic development opportunities. The e/motion activation the City of Cambridge is implementing at Winterfest will attract visitors and increase foot traffic, contributing to the economic vitality of the main street while ensuring downtown is an inclusive place for everyone.”
Winterfest will also host special pop-up events on Tuesday evenings across Cambridge throughout the festival, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and feature food, vendors and entertainment.
