Cambridge residents will soon have a new league available to play one of North America's fastest growing sports.
Elevation Athletics is bringing beginner and experienced pickleball leagues to the city starting this month.
The idea was brought forward after the not-for-profit worked with city staff over the summer to put on games at Duncan McIntosh Arena. With a healthy number of players looking for somewhere to play in the winter, an agreement was made to use the school in Hespeler.
With similar leagues across Canada, EA administrator Stephanie Merrick is excited to provide another form of recreation to the community.
"What's great about pickleball is it doesn't matter what your background is," Merrick said.
"It doesn't matter if you've played sports or what age you are. It's great for young people, seniors, everyone can join."
Merrick herself is an example of how someone can be introduced to the game.
Having been involved in sports and recreation for years, pickleball "fell into her lap" through friendships, which isn't an uncommon way for people to be exposed to it.
The physical and mental benefits of recreation are well known, whether it be from the exercise it promotes or the opportunity to form connections with others.
Merrick said the ease in which people pick up the sport makes it a popular choice among all ages.
The beginner league is designed for people who have never played before and includes learning drills and skills before taking part in games, while the experienced league is for players who have familiarity playing pickleball.
Regardless of the league, Elevation Athletics puts an emphasis on fun over winning and losing.
"It's a great community," Merrick said.
"There's so many people that want to go out and make new friends in a positive atmosphere. It's a great way to make and keep friends"
League play begins on Nov. 13 and ends Jan. 22.
