The fire was inaccessible to local firefighters, in a heavily wooded area between the Cambridge To Paris Rail Trail and the Grand River.

Fire crews from Cambridge and North Dumfries were called to a large forest fire that started at an encampment near Highway 24, just south of the city, earlier this morning.

Deputy fire chief Brad Churchill said the fire was well off the road, buried in the woods between the Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail and the river.

"Three Cambridge Fire Department units and one unit from North Dumfries Fire Department responded to an encampment fire that was well off the road at 1092 Brantford Highway this morning at approximately 7:30 a.m.," he wrote in an email to CambridgeToday.

He added that the fire was approximately 15 meters by 15 meters in size and it completely enveloped the encampment.

"Despite our best efforts, the entire encampment was unfortunately destroyed. Fortunately, there were no injuries," Churchill said.

Fire crews were unable to reach the camp to provide a response as it was buried in a thick forest with little access for the fire engines.

No cause was determined, but CFD noted it was not suspicious and crews have since packed up and left the scene.
