Hacksmith Industries among 20 sites at this year's Doors Open

Doors Open Waterloo Region returns in September for the first in-person tours in four years

Doors Open Waterloo Region, the annual back-stage pass that gets visitors behind the scenes and into buildings not normally open to the public, returns as an in-person event in 2023.

The event will return to a live event for the first time in four years on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring a day of discovery on tours of 20 local destinations including noteworthy buildings, interesting places and heritage sites.

Admission to all Doors Open sites is free.

This year's event includes five Cambridge destinations, including Hacksmith Industries where local inventor and YouTube content creator James Hobson and his team apply their ingenuity and engineering skills to create real, working prototypes of ideas made famous in comic books, video games and movies. Think Luke Skywalker's lightsaber, Thor's hammer and Captain America's shield.

The creations made within the walls of their Beaverdale Road facility have garnered a worldwide YouTube channel following of close to 14 million subscribers.

In addition to Hacksmith, visitors to Cambridge Doors Open sites will have a chance to tour two local churches and go behind the scenes at the Idea Exchange.

Other sites of note around the region include the Waterloo Central Railway restoration and maintenance facility, the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI Campus) and the Reep House for Sustainable Living.
