Approximately 4,500 customers were left without power last night as a severe thunderstorm storm ripped through Cambridge and the surrounding area.

In an email to CambridgeToday, Grandbridge Energy said that as of 1 a.m. all repairs had been completed and its distribution system was fully functional.

"GrandBridge Energy crews responded to multiple outages and safely removed downed trees from overhead wires," Sheri Ojero, manager of corporate communications for Grandbridge Energy said.

"The crews also made repairs to equipment that was damaged by lightning. Our system control operators were carefully monitoring the system and rerouting the flow of electricity to isolate the outages and minimize the number of customers impacted."

When the weather lightened, residents took to social media to share pictures of uprooted trees and other damage.

"Careful going down Beverly Street towards downtown Galt.. tree uprooted and leaning on power lines... branches on road...hydro was contacted...," one post read.

The post was later updated to say "Edited to add: all cleaned up now and good to go.."

Ojero emphasized that GrandBridge doesn't sit back and wait for the clean up and restoration, but is always planning ahead for such situations.

"GrandBridge Energy takes several proactive measures to minimize the impact of storms on our distribution system, including regular maintenance of our electrical infrastructure, tree trimming and the installation of automated switches," she said.

"GrandBridge Energy has a comprehensive Emergency Preparedness Plan that establishes protocols for restoring power, mobilizing our field crews and communicating with affected customers."
