Right now, the team at McDougall Cottage is working on an exciting new project—a community-driven exhibit tentatively titled The Power of Nostalgia.
“The exhibit, opening in 2026, will explore the nostalgic memories associated with the spaces that hold the most meaning, through the decades, for Cambridge residents,” says Michelle Bartlett, Head of Content and Experience at McDougall Cottage. “We want to highlight Cambridge’s most cherished and nostalgic places, and the fond memories associated with them. To do that, we need your help. We want to hear which places and spaces mean the most to you and why?”
To gather these stories, the museum has launched “The Power of Nostalgia” public survey. Past and present Cambridge residents are invited to contribute their stories and insights by completing the survey by March 28. These memories, insights, and stories will be key to bringing the exhibit to life.
Please share your stories by completing the survey here:

Discover the history and charm of McDougall Cottage
Historic McDougall Cottage may well be one of these nostalgic Cambridge locations. Dating back to 1858, the beautifully preserved 19th-century stone cottage, sitting on the banks of the Grand River, is known for its Scottish heritage and rich décor.
And what a rich past it has had! Initially, it was the home of two families of Scottish immigrants—first the McDougalls and later the Bairds. Both families contributed to the early industrial and cultural life of Cambridge, which was then known as Galt.
Its architecture is complemented by striking gardens, and one-of-a-kind details inside, like the 120-year-old hand-painted trompe-l’œil friezes and murals. The home is one of the few remaining structures of its kind along the Grand River.
