An evening fire covered parts of Preston in thick smoke causing significant damage.

According to the Cambridge Fire Department, four stations responded to reports of a structural fire on Hamilton Street at approximately 8:00 p.m. last evening.

"Crews quickly gained fire control of a detached garage fire and stopped any exposure damage. The garage has significant fire and smoke damage," wrote deputy fire chief Brad Churchill in an email to CambridgeToday.

Churchill estimates the fire to have caused around $250k in damages and the fire department is not considering the blaze suspicious.

Due to the extensive damage, the ignition source or origin is undetermined but likely a mechanical failure.

The garage was confirmed to be full of classic cars and tools that were all lost in the fire.

Crews cleared the scene within two hours and returned the property to the owners.

"CFD reminds everyone that in the case of an emergency, call 911 immediately," added Churchill.
