Police close off Water Street and Concession Street for an investigation

Police have reopened the Concession Street bridge following an early morning police investigation.

Waterloo Regional Police Services closed off the bridge and surrounding trails near the Grand River for several hours this morning.

According to WRPS, at approximately 3:40 a.m., they received a report of a male in distress in the area of Concession Street and Water Street South in Cambridge.

As a result of the incident, the male was transported to hospital and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has invoked its mandate.

According to the SIU's website, the incident is being investigated as a "custody injury" to the individual.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.

This is the second SIU investigation into WRPS in 2024. The mandate also prevents WRPS from commenting on the incident.
