The City of Cambridge is offering free trees to residents to help maintain and improve the tree canopy in the city.
Applications for the free trees are open from Sept. 25 until Wednesday, Sept. 27.
The city warns that there are limited spots and the trees will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
"To encourage tree planting in our city, we’re giving away free trees to residents on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Galt Arena Gardens from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.," said the city on its website.
Any resident who filled out the form for their tree will be able to pick it up on Sept. 30 at Galt Arena.
The city has laid out some rules and regulations to obtain the tree: applicants must prove they are a resident of Cambridge, only one tree per address and per person and the tree must be planted on private property.
Residents are also responsible for planting, watering, and maintaining the tree.
The four types of native tree species being offered are: sugar maple, hackberry, eastern rudbud and serviceberry.
Last year, the city saw an overwhelming response from the community giving out trees to over 400 residents.
“I was surprised by the response from the community,” said Kristen Grittani, forestry technician for the City of Cambridge to CambridgeToday after last years jump in interest.
“Most of our trees went within the first couple hours of opening. I think people are becoming more interested and understanding the benefits of the tree canopy and helping the environment."
