Transit workers and the Region of Waterloo have failed to reach a contract agreement and as a result, buses will not be operating as of Monday morning, the region said Sunday night in a news release.

Members of UNIFOR, Local 4304, representing Grand River Transit, busPLUS, MobilityPLUS operators, reservationists, fleet mechanics and service attendants have not ratified an agreement with the Region of Waterloo and will be on strike as of 12:01 a.m., the region said.

Bus service will stop at 3 a.m., the region said.

As a result, conventional bus, MobilityPLUS and busPLUS services will not operate tomorrow (Monday, May 1).

ION train service will continue as it is maintained and operated by Keolis, according to the region's news release.

"Despite an offer that was competitive for GRT staff and affordable for residents, unfortunately we were not able to reach an agreement," the news release states.

"The Region is committed to reaching an agreement and we remain open to discussions with the union."

"We appreciate that customers rely on transit on a daily basis and we will continue to update customers and residents with information as soon as it becomes available."
