Loneliness is a silent challenge faced by many in our community, but for over 30 years, Cambridge’s Friendly Visiting Program has been offering a solution, one heartfelt conversation at a time. Designed to reduce isolation among older adults and adults with disabilities, this program has become a lifeline for those seeking companionship and connection.
“This program is about more than just visits,” says Support Worker Jessica Salvagna. “It’s about creating belonging, fostering friendships, and helping individuals feel heard and valued. The impact goes beyond reducing loneliness—we’ve seen lives transformed.”
The Friendly Visiting Program pairs volunteers with clients for one-on-one visits. These visits cater to the unique interests of both parties, whether it’s a walk in the park, baking cookies, playing board games, or simply chatting over coffee. Every interaction is an opportunity to share stories, laughter, and mutual learning. Volunteers and clients often describe the experience as creating new families and forever bonds.
While the success stories are inspiring, the program is facing a critical challenge. The demand for visits has surged, and the waiting list for participation is now over a year long. The need for compassionate volunteers is urgent.
“We need more people who can open their hearts and give their time,” says Salvagna. “Volunteers are the backbone of this program. Without their dedication, we cannot reach everyone who needs help.”
To be a volunteer, you don’t need prior experience in caregiving or health services. What you do need is a genuine desire to connect with someone and bring a little light into their life. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and able to commit to the program for a minimum of eight months. Training is provided to ensure volunteers feel prepared and supported every step of the way.
“Volunteers tell us they gain as much as they give,” Salvagna shares. “They build meaningful relationships, strengthen their communication skills, and experience the joy of knowing they’ve made a real difference.”
If you’ve been searching for a way to give back, this is your chance. The Friendly Visiting Program is actively seeking individuals ready to step up and bring connection to those who need it most. Whether it’s an hour of conversation or an afternoon of shared activities, your time can truly change a life.
