In preparation for the new school year, Preston Heights Community Group is hosting a Neighbourhood Donation Drive on Aug. 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The donation drive will be filled with activities, giveaways, and food,” said Chloe Ryan, engagement worker at Preston Heights Community Group. “It’s a great way to bring the community together.”

Ryan said the event is made possible through a Neighbourhood Action Grant which supports neighbourhood group projects such as events, activities, learning opportunities, and legacy projects.

Residents can apply for a grant with a partner from another household to plan an event or project in their neighbourhood to create connections between neighbours.

The Preston Heights Community Group's Neighbourhood Donation Drive will be held at the community centre at 350 Linden Drive in Preston. Ryan says that the group looks forward to helping families as September draws near.

“We are taking donations of clothing and school supplies. People can bring in their donations during the last week of July and the first week of August. At the event, people can choose what they would like,” Ryan said.

The Preston Heights Community Group was founded in 1987 by a group of engaged neighbours seeking an opportunity for youth to participate in organized recreational and social activities.

The group is a not-for-profit organization that supports positive development in the Preston Heights neighbourhood of Cambridge. Through partnerships and citizen involvement, it provide programs throughout the year, and services families, children, teens and adults.

“There is so much being offered. We have a variety of programming for kids this summer and camp is also back on. The kids were a little nervous but so excited this summer,” Ryan said.

“And we also work together with local businesses. Last month we held a Neighbourhood Night. This is when someone brings food from a nearby restaurant and there’s lots of fun activities too.”

For the upcoming Neighbourhood Donation Drive, anyone can drop off donations of clothing and school supplies at the Preston Heights Community Centre at 350 Linden Drive in Preston.
