THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Police say a Cambridge resident is among eight people who were arrested and charged with 72 offences in an Ontario Provincial Police joint forces guns and gangs investigation in the city of Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario.
In January, an investigative team, consisting of members from the OPP, Thunder Bay Police Service and Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, began an investigation into a multi-jurisdictional drug trafficking network in Thunder Bay, according to an OPP news release.
As a result, on May 30 members of the Provincial Joint Forces Guns and Gangs Enforcement Team in coordination with the Thunder Bay Police's Emergency Tactical Unit executed three search warrants at locations in the south end of Thunder Bay.
Police seized the following items during the search warrants:
- Two 9mm handguns
- 1 extended magazine with 23 rounds of ammunition
- One 31 round high-capacity magazine with 11 rounds of ammunition
- Approximately $25,000 in cash
- 7 acetaminophen and oxycodone tablets
- Approximately 300 grams of suspected crack cocaine
- Approximately 4 grams of suspected fentanyl
- 4 digital scales
- 10 cell phones
A 25-year-old Cambridge resident and five others were remanded into custody while two were released. The places of residence of the people detained include Thunder Bay, the Greater Toronto Area and Quebec.
The Cambridge suspect is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on June 7.
