APRIL 12, 1943 – MAY 17, 2024

Maureen Lillian Elizabeth (Durning) Humphrey was born on April 12, 1943, in Montreal, Quebec. She departed peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 17, 2024, at Season’s Retirement Home in Cambridge, Ontario, after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s. Maureen was 81.

Maureen is survived by her three devoted daughters and their husbands, Lisa and Joe (Robson), Leah and Brad (Brock) and Diane and Kyle (Deighan); her seven cherished grandchildren, Jack (Deighan), Paul (Robson), Georgia (Deighan), Taylor (Brock), Zoe (Deighan), Shelby (Brock) and Rielyn (Brock); her brother Hugh and his wife Molly and their children Sarah and Ted; her sister Coleen and extended family members. Maureen was predeceased by the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Humphrey (1939-1990).

Maureen and Bob married in 1965 and raised their three daughters in Cardinal Ontario, Fonthill Ontario, London Ontario and Chicago, Illinois, before Maureen settled back in Canada after Bob’s sudden death. Family was everything to Maureen. She was the initiator and host who connected generations through summer visits and Sunday dinners. Maureen was a career homemaker, and no matter where her home was, raising her family was always her priority. Maureen was the mother who never missed a cross country meet, swim meet, basketball game or gymnastics competition. She poured everything she had into raising her children, encouraging them to participate and fostering their confidence and independence.

In the second half of her adult life, after Bob’s death, Maureen’s dedication to family remained unwavering. She moved many times to remain close to her daughters, always establishing a warm, welcoming home where she could host the family or spend free time in the serenity of the beautiful gardens she would ultimately create. Maureen’s sense of adventure remained keen throughout her life and she was always up for a concert, exotic trip to Africa or Australia or “roughing it” at a cottage for the summer as long as it involved family. And more than anything, Maureen’s seven grandchildren, cherished beyond measure, brought boundless joy to her life.

In her final years, Maureen faced Alzheimer’s with incredible courage and optimism. As her beloved caregivers at Season’s can attest, the disease was no match for Maureen’s kind and loving personality and ever-present sense of humour.

Heartfelt gratitude extends to the compassionate staff at Season’s Retirement Home, as well as Dr. Munoz and staff and the palliative team in Cambridge, whose exceptional care ensured Maureen’s peaceful transition from this cherished life.

Even at the end, Maureen found a way to smile and laugh or occasionally wave a finger if needed. Maureen will be remembered for her love of family and her unbounded kindness.

We love you Mom.

A memorial for Maureen will be held in Cardinal in July when she will be reunited for eternity with Bob. We will notify friends and family.
