It is with profound sadness that the family of Michael (Mike) Farnan announces his peaceful passing on Monday June 24 at the age of 83. Mike was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 28 years, Jane; his children Rory (Tanya) and Kevin (Theresa); as well as his grandchildren Kaydyn, Michael, Alexander, Liam, and Tilly. Mike is predeceased by his wife Maureen and daughter Cara.
Mike was born in Dublin Ireland on January 29, 1941, and raised in a strong Catholic family. Following high-school, Mike entered the Marist Seminary in Dublin for 5 years. Also in that period, Mike studied history and world religions at the University of Dublin. After leaving Ireland, Mike studied at the University of London, and started his teaching career in England for 7 years. In 1970, Mike immigrated to Canada, and continued his teaching in Montreal. During that period, Mike studied at McGill University, and graduated with a Masters of Education. After obtaining his Masters, Mike moved to Cambridge where he started his family. It was there that he began his work in politics, and the labour movement, with the goal of being a strong voice for the people. As a teacher, Mike held a union leadership role in the advancement of teachers, while advocating for a fair and just society.
From 1982-1987, Mike was a municipal councillor in Cambridge. Mike was first elected Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in 1987, serving in various critic roles as a member of the opposition. In 1990 Mike was re-elected as part of the Bob Rae Government and held various Cabinet positions, including Minister of Transportation, Associate Minister of Education, Minister of Correctional Services, Minister of the Solicitor General, and First Deputy Speaker of the House. After his political career ended in 1995, Mike started his own business as Real Estate Broker, and later returned to teach for 3 years to end his teaching career. During his retirement, Mike continued to play an active role in the community.
Mike’s lifelong commitment of service has touched the lives of many. He has helped and inspired countless people in promoting a positive way of living. Mike leaves an everlasting legacy, and will always be remembered for his laughter, wisdom, kindness, and love.
Mike will be honoured at T. Little Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, Cambridge. Visitations will take place Thursday June 27, between 2-4 pm, and 7-9 pm. A ceremony of life takes place Friday June 28 at 11 am.
