We surprise Cambridge's unofficial downtown ambassador with a Random Act of Kindness

Our CambridgeToday team surprises Joe Lethbridge, a local photographer who spends his free time taking the path less travelled

Joe Lethbridge travels by foot using his unique perspective to take photographs of Cambridge and shares them widely at no cost.

Occasionally, Joe will sell his favourite captures in order to donate the proceeds to charities such as YWCA, Cambridge Food Bank and Centre for the Arts.

Joe takes the paths less travelled and often encounters some of Cambridge's most vulnerable citizens, helping out any way he can.

While Joe lives a leaner existence he is quick to share what he has with strangers, often doing with less for himself.

An avid thrift shopper Joe alerts others to good buys in the area.

Inspired by Joe, Carol Thorman nominated him for a CambridgeToday Random Act of Kindness.

“Joe Lethbridge is definitely worthy of special recognition,” shared Carol. “He is truly one of the community's unsung heroes.”

“Joe is unassuming,” said Carol when asked about Joe’s character. “Sometimes the best gift we can give is to treat each other with basic human decency and that’s what Joe does.”

We decided to pay Joe’s kindness forward and surprise him with a Random Act of Kindness, arriving at Java Jax Good Roast Coffee with gifts from our generous community partners.

This included a gift certificate from Java Jax and a gift certificate from Henry’s Camera Kitchener.

Joe was surprised and flattered to receive the Random Act of Kindness.

“I’m humbled. I only do what I hope everyone would," said Joe. “Economic circumstances have no bearing on our ability to do the smallest things like smiling at a stranger or pausing to share hidden gems in our beautiful city.”

Thank you to our co-sponsors for making this Random Act of Kindness possible.

If you know someone in the community who deserves recognition for their selfless actions, positivity in the face of hardship, or just for being a great person, you can nominate them for a Random Act of Kindness. Fill out our nomination form today!
