What do you get when you mix a little bit of country music with some good old-fashioned gospel?

Drayton Entertainment’s spirited musical extravaganza, Good Ol’ Country Gospel is set to hit the stage from October 27 to November 12 at the Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge.

From soul-stirring ballads to high-energy songs of praise, Good Ol’ Country Gospel covers the gamut of gospel classics including “Amazing Grace,” “I’ll Fly Away,” Peace in the Valley,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” all with a country twist.

“Packed with humour and heart, Good Ol’ Country Gospel is a fun-filled tribute to the beloved and enduring canon of gospel music,” says Alex Mustakas, artistic director at Drayton Entertainment.

“Audiences will be uplifted, inspired, and amazed by the depth of talent on stage.”

Conceived, directed, and choreographed by David Rogers, one of Canada’s most accomplished artists, the production features singing, dancing, and a wide variety of instruments that cast members play throughout the show.

“The show takes place in old fashioned little brown church set in the 1950’s to put everyone in the feel of ‘good ol' country,’ Rogers said.

“It’s presented in such a fun and glorious way and that’s because of all of the talent on stage. The performers all play instruments including the country fiddle, banjo, mandolin, organ, and the piano, it’s all covered.”

The production is notable for featuring some of the same performers who dazzled audiences with their musicianship in Fiddler on the Loose, which launched Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge’s 2022 Season earlier this summer.

Rogers said that audiences will witness some of their favourite songs being honoured, and that the show is not just for those who are religious.

“Much of this music has touched a big part of our society. We all know this music. And it was all recorded by some musical 'greats' including Loretta Lynn, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Reba McEntyre and Alan Jackson,” Rogers said.

Rogers said that this uplifting musical celebration has much to offer audiences.

“Whether it’s happy or sad, everyone in some way, will be moved or brought back to a memory,” Rogers said.

“Every show offers some inspiration, and with Good Ol’ Country Gospel, the music is so moving and meaningful to everyone who sees it.”
