Two dogs are recovering after being found abandoned by their owners in Cambridge last week.

Both animals were discovered in rough shape with one black dog being found tied up and covered in maggots. The other dog was running in the streets with large lacerations on its neck.

The dogs were transferred to Holliday Veterinary Hospital where they are currently recovering, according to the Cambridge Humane Society executive director Michelle Gellatly.

"Both Toto and White Beard are recovering well. Toto’s wounds are still healing and we expect the two of them to be up for adoption within a couple of weeks," said Gellatly.

Finding animals abandoned is not uncommon for the humane society, but these two cases are the worst she's ever seen.

Toto the terrier was found covered in blood with a hair tie stuck in its mouth. The team at Holliday Veterinary Hospital was able to remove it quickly, but the band had rotted through soft tissue for weeks causing open rotting tissue on top of her head.

They noted these wounds were connected to openings in her mouth.

Gellatly wants to remind all pet owners that abandoning an animal should never be considered an option and there are other avenues to take when looking to re-home a pet.

The Emergency Pet Food Bank operates Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Those interested must register online and show ID for pickup.

The humane society supplies enough food for two weeks at a time and can only be accessed twice a month.

"Donations are also distributed to 519 Community Collective outreach program as well as the Self Help Food Bank to ensure clients have access to food in various locations," she said.

So far in 2024, nearly 1,000 animals have been helped using their food program.

The humane society will be posting White Beard and Toto's journey back to full health and hopefully finding his forever home on their social media pages.
