Special Olympics Ontario and the Waterloo Region District School Board are teaming up to showcase the power of sport.
Families, caregivers and students within the public board are being welcomed to an open house on April 23 designed to educate people about community-based sports activities.
Attendees will learn the important impact Special Olympics has on athletes and what sports options are available in the region.
Athletes and coaches from a variety of events will also be on hand and the organization will be looking for new participants and volunteers.
The open house will be hosted at the St. Jacob’s Learning Hub, WRDSB Education Centre, located at 51 Ardelt Ave. in Kitchener from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Refreshments and snacks are provided
Those looking to attend must RSVP and can do so here.
The 2024 Special Olympics Spring Games are coming to Waterloo region from May 23 to 25.
Over 2,500 athletes, coaches, staff, volunteers and spectators are set to take part in basketball, swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, powerlifting and 10-pin bowling.
Police services across Ontario have been hosting the games since 1996.
Back in March, the Waterloo Regional Police Service raised over $50,000 for the games through its annual Polar Plunge.
Combined with the "Freezin' for a Reason" fundraiser, the service is helping push the "Draft an Athlete" campaign where residents can fund athletes participation in the games.
Anyone interested in drafting an athlete can do so by visiting specialolympicsontario.ca.
