Setbacks with construction push opening of Ed Newland pool

The opening of the Ed Newland pool in Preston is delayed over a month due to staff shortages and supply chain issues

A lot more work needs to be done at the Ed Newland pool in Preston before it can open for the 2023 season.

The renovation of the Ed Newland pool in Preston is currently underway, but delays with construction are pushing the re-opening back a few weeks.

Originally slated to open with other city run pools on June 17, worker shortages and other unforeseen circumstances are delaying the popular Preston pool until the end of July.

"To allow staff more time to address pressures created by the skilled labor shortage, supply chain issues, and expanded design, the city is extending the completion date of the Ed Newland Outdoor Pool renovation to July 29, 2023," wrote the City of Cambridge in a press release.

The renovation to the 90-year-old pool was approved by city council last year to replace the pool liners, build a new deck area and update the circulation system. The $1.2 million upgrade will also address accessibility concerns and make it more efficient to operate.

According to a staff report, attendance in 2021 at the pool was the highest it has ever been, demonstrating the importance of the pool as an appealing outdoor amenity for families.

The city is aware how much the pool means to the community and how much they rely on it to cool off during the hot summer months. Unfortunately for the people of Preston, they will have to wait a few extra weeks to enjoy their popular swim spot.

"We encourage residents to continue to enjoy our other aquatic facilities including the George Hancock Outdoor Pool, which will be opening as scheduled on June 17, as well as the pools at John Dolson and W.G. Johnson recreation centres," said the city.
