The City of Cambridge is offering up the former Royal Bank space on King Street East in Preston for the Cambridge Salvation Army's annual Toy Mountain toy drive this year.
“I’m pleased that we were able to help the Cambridge Salvation Army with use of this space so they can continue their work to ensure every child in our community has a gift to open this holiday,” said Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett in a press release. “When I was first contacted by their National Headquarters that their local branch had lost their planned location, City staff and my office didn’t hesitate to jump in to help.”
With the Salvation Army’s previous facility undergoing a rebuild and last year’s borrowed facility not available, city staff met with organizers and offered up the site on King Street at no cost.
“The Salvation Army Cambridge Community Services would like to express our deepest gratitude to the City of Cambridge, particularly the Councillors and staff involved in arranging the loan of the former RBC building in Preston to accommodate our Christmas Toy Mountain Toy Shop for this year’s campaign,” said Salvation Army Executive Director, Darren Woods in the release.
“Thanks to the City, our crucial program can run normally this year, and the children of this city will receive their Christmas gifts and toys as normal. Organizationally, of course, we will benefit from the use of this building by having a donated space from which to operate, but it is the children of the city who will benefit most from the generosity extended. Thank you for your care and support.”
The King Street East location will offer ample space for staff and volunteers to organize, process, sort, and distribute donations.
Donations of new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children ages 0-16 can be dropped off at the King Street Toy Shop location at 637 King Street E. Cash donations are also being accepted at any kettle locations throughout the city from late November to Christmas Eve, or online at donate.salvationarmy.ca
The Salvation Army’s annual Toy Mountain campaign in Cambridge provides approximately 3,000 children with a new toy or gift each Christmas.
