The Cambridge Provincial Liberal Association has named Rob Deutschmann as its official candidate for the upcoming provincial election.
Following the announcement, the regional councillor for the last six years said he resigned from regional council effective today.
Deutschmann served as mayor of North Dumfries Township from 2010 to 2014.
A press release from the Liberal association calls him a community leader, seasoned advocate, and experienced public servant with a proven track record of commitment and service to the people of Cambridge.
"I am honoured to have the opportunity to represent the Cambridge community as the Liberal candidate," said Deutschmann in the release. "Cambridge is a vibrant, growing city with immense potential.
"Together, we can work to create a brighter future for everyone by focusing on key issues such as securing public health care that works for our community – including mental health and addiction, supporting our teachers and workers in education, negotiating a new deal for municipalities that makes life more affordable for residents of Cambridge, and protecting local businesses and jobs."
Deutschmann is a lifelong resident of the Waterloo region and a practicing personal injury lawyer.
"With his extensive background in law and as a small business owner for 30 years, Rob brings a unique perspective to tackling the challenges facing Cambridge and the province," says the release.
Recognizing the significant and pending threat Cambridge and Ontario face from the potential imposition of tariffs by the United States, Deutschmann called for a strong, unified response to protect our economic interests.
"I fully support a Team Canada approach and believe we must develop a Team Ontario strategy, working collaboratively with all political parties in our province to craft an effective Ontario and Team Canada response," he said.
The Liberal association says Deutschmann's experience as both a municipal politician and a businessman for three decades positions him uniquely to advocate for Cambridge's interests at Queen's Park.
"Cambridge deserves a representative who understands the complexities of both government and business," Deutschmann said. "I am prepared to be that strong and determined advocate our community needs."
