The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is terminating a flood warning message issued on Monday for West Montrose, but says a watershed condition statement released last Friday warning about heavy river flows due to continued runoff remains in effect for all areas of the Grand River watershed.
The GRCA says its multi-purpose reservoirs at Belwood, Conestogo, Guelph, Luther, Woolwich, Laurel, and Shade’s Mills were operated to reduce downstream flooding during a weekend weather system that brought more than 30 mm of rain to the region.
Stored water is now being slowly released to return reservoirs to their normal level for this time of year and downstream flows will remain elevated through the week, reads a press release.
Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local municipal flood response programs and be prepared for flooding due to the elevated risk at this time.
Banks adjacent to local waterways are very slippery and when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Any ice-covered bodies of water are considered unsafe. Parents are reminded to keep children and pets away from all water bodies.
