Regional hospitals have provided an update on the number of infectious COVID patients in their care, saying that while the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the region has dropped, they are continuing to see new patients daily.
“The number of new cases in the province has risen over the past several weeks. We know that hospitalizations and deaths tend to follow that rise as well. With a fourth wave knocking on our door, we encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as they can," said Cambridge Memorial Hospital president Patrick Gaskin in a statement.
The region's hospitals currently have a total of 17 COVID-19 patients in their care, with eight at St. Mary's General Hospital, three at CMH, and six at Grand River Hospital. These numbers only show actively infectious patients, and are more up-to-date than the data released by Public Health.
The most recent peak was in June, with 61 infectious patients being hospitalized throughout the region.
“Compared to previous peaks, the proportion of hospitalized patients ending up in our region’s intensive care units is much greater," Gaskin said.
In contrast, the Guelph General Hospital currently has no infectious COVID-19 patients in their care.
