The Region of Waterloo is partnering with Thresholds Homes and Supports to open an overnight warming space in Kitchener.

With the number of people experiencing homelessness climbing at an alarming rate, and 2,371 instances of homelessness recorded in October 2024 during the latest Point in Time Count, offering more spaces for respite from the cold is imperative, says a press release.

“In this cold weather, finding more solutions to help our most vulnerable stay safe and warm is a top priority. Through the Plan to End Chronic Homelessness, regional council and the community have committed to creating more winter warming spaces in our region,” said Coun. Jim Erb, Chair of the Community and health services committee.

In response to urgent needs, the region and Thresholds will be opening an overnight warming centre at 298 Lawrence Avenue in Kitchener. The location will begin operating on January 17 and will operate from 7:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily.

The region is working on adding more overnight warming supports in addition to the existing emergency shelters, including day time options available seven days a week, the region said in an email to CambridgeToday when asked about a warming centre for Cambridge.

Updates will be shared when finalized, the region says.

"Thresholds is proud to work within a community that ensures that every person has a warm place to rest during a time when community housing resources are inaccessible to so many," said Eric Philip, CEO of Thresholds Homes and Supports.

Thresholds Homes and Supports is a recovery-oriented, community-integrated agency that focuses on improved quality of life and enhanced independence for people experiencing mental health issues by providing access to affordable housing and flexible, individualized support.
