A popular spot for Cambridge dog walkers could soon be developed into affordable housing.
The Region of Waterloo plans to send out a request for proposal (RFP) to private and non-profit developers to build affordable housing units at 30 Lauris Avenue once planning approvals are completed.
The 1.13 hectare property that was once home to a school has been vacant for a decade and the region declared it surplus in 2021.
The region's official plan has the space zoned for low to medium residential housing and the RFP will call for a number of requirements in the successful proposal, the main one being that a minimum 30 per cent of the units built there must be deemed affordable, as defined by rents at or below 80 per cent of the median market rent.
Those rents must also remain in place for the minimum target of 40 years and the building would have to remain smoke-free.
Provision of community space and commercial space will also be a consideration of the RFP.
The region is hosting an in-person information session about the plan May 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Alison Neighbourhood Community Centre at 127 Elgin St. N.
A virtual information session wil follow on May 25 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
