The Waterloo Region District School Board is set to crack down on the use of cellphones in the classroom.

Beginning in September, the WRDSB code of conduct requires students refrain from using their cellphones with a few specific exceptions.

Devices will only be allowed for educational purposes as directed by an educator, for health and medical purposes and to support special education needs per a student’s Individual Education Plan.

Students in Grade's 7 to 12 can use their phones during breaks, lunch and spares.

Access to social media platforms on school networks and devices will also be restricted.

"These changes being implemented at all schools are based on frameworks developed at a number of WRDSB schools in recent years," a statement on the board's website reads.

"In partnership with students and families, these schools implemented changes to student use of cell phones. Staff, students and families all noticed positive impacts to student achievement and well-being as a result."

To reach their children, families are encouraged to contact the school directly.
