Waterloo regional police confirmed they are investigating "a disturbance" between two men at the campaign office of Kitchener-South Hespeler Conservative candidate Tyler Calver on Wednesday afternoon.
One of those men is a volunteer with Calver's campaign.
The incident, which happened near the Block Line Road office in Kitchener, allegedly involved a man grabbing and spitting in the volunteer’s face.
Calver said since police are investigating, no further comment would be coming on the incident.
Calver did post a written statement on social media.
The full statement from Calver, as posted Thursday morning on his Twitter and Facebook pages, reads:
“An incident occurred yesterday afternoon at my campaign office where a man assaulted one of our volunteers. The Waterloo Regional Police Service was called, as a result an investigation was started and charges are currently pending.
"Volunteers, and their safety is an integral part of all campaigns and remains my top priority. Violence has no place in the democratic process. As the investigation is ongoing our campaign will not be providing further comment at this time.”
Response to the incident was swift on Twitter, with a volunteer with an NDP campaign calling the behaviour unacceptable.
Calver responded, saying “Despite party politics, together we can be united to condemn violence of any kind in our community.”
The incident comes less than two weeks after angry protesters disrupted Liberal leader Justin Trudeau's visit to Cambridge and less than a week after Trudeau and his entourage were pelted with gravel during a stop in London.
