Special Olympics Ontario provides programming and events for over 26,000 athletes. All funds raised from the polar plunge support the cause.

Anyone brave enough to jump into a pool of frigid water is invited to take the plunge help raise money for the Special Olympics.

Registration is now open for teams and individuals for the annual Waterloo Regional Police Service's Polar Plunge on March 2 at Waterloo Regional Police Headquarters, 200 Maple Grove Road,

Last year WRPS was able to raise over $43,000 for the Special Olympics with more than 100 plungers taking the leap into an ice cold pool.

"Whether you are an individual, organization or business, the Polar Plunge welcomes all do-gooders with a little courage and a warm heart willing to get cold and creative for a worthy cause," wrote WRPS on their website. "All funds raised will support programming and events for 23,000 athletes across the province."

Teams representing the Cambridge RedHawks, WRPS, Waterloo Region Paramedic Services and Special Olympians dress up in costumes or jump in wearing their full uniforms for charity.

The fundraiser currently has a goal of $30,000 and has already raised nearly $1,000 in just over 24 hours.

Those interested in signing up for the plunge or who are looking to make a donation can find more information on the WRPS website
