Knowing Cambridge is the largest city in the province not served by passenger rail service, the Region of Waterloo sought to change that this year when it launched efforts to create a business case aimed at linking the city to Guelph with daily GO Transit.
The region began gathering feedback on the promising proposal last January and by March, a business case was underway after years of study.
The Region of Waterloo's business case to Metrolinx suggests costs in the range of $550 million for 17-minute GO service from a station on Hespeler Road to Guelph with one or two trains every 60 minutes using the Fergus Subdivision Line. The CN freight line runs between Pinebush Road and Guelph.
It's expected the project would take about six years to implement.
The business case was recently endorsed by the City of Cambridge after regional councillors approved it in August.
