Last evening at approximately 5:10 p.m., Cambridge Fire responded from five fire stations to a residential structure fire in the Galt area of the city that resulted in one fatality.

Upon arrival on the scene, Cambridge Fire crews reported heavy smoke and significant fire coming from the front of the house.  Fire crews entered the structure to initiate interior firefighting operations and begin searching for occupants, but increasing heat and intensifying fire conditions forced crews to withdraw. Soon after exiting the house, the main floor was fully engulfed by flames, and a floor partially collapsed.

Crews are expected to remain on scene throughout the night and into tomorrow to address any remaining hot spots. Waterloo Regional Police Service and Cambridge Fire will be maintaining care and control of the scene.

The residential structure sustained significant damage. Structural integrity will have to be assessed for safety prior to entry for investigation purposes; which will be conducted during daylight hours. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and staff from the OFM Fire Investigation Services will be attending to help determine the origin, cause, and circumstances of the fire.

“We are saddened by this tragic loss of life”, said Cambridge Fire Chief Brian Arnold. “We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends for their loss.” Chief Arnold went on to thank his crews, adding, “Cambridge Firefighters performed admirably and I commend them for their efforts. No firefighter ever wants to encounter such an outcome, and we mourn along with the community.”

To protect the privacy of those impacted and the integrity of the investigation, further details will not be provided at this time.
