Ensuring the safety of hikers and cyclists crossing Speedsville Road on the Mill Run Trail is what's behind a plan to install a pedestrian crossover complete with signs, pavement markings, illumination and concrete landing pads.
The work is expected to proceed this summer at a cost of $112,000, already approved in the city's 2023 capital program.
Council is expected to rubber stamp the recommended improvement next week, more than a year after the Cambridge Cycling and Trails Advisory Committee was consulted about the proposal after the city heard several concerns from trail users about the volume and speed of traffic on Speedsville Road.
The committee agreed "this is a much-needed improvement and fully supports the implementation" of the crossover.
The city assessed the trail crossing using Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) criteria and concluded that based on the number of crossings by trail users and the volume of traffic on Speedsville Road that the installation of a pedestrian crossover is warranted.
As part of the implementation of the new pedestrian crossover, service gates will also be installed at both trail entrances.
The revised traffic bylaw for that stretch will come into force once the signs are erected to identify the crossing.
