The Local Eatery, located on Main Street in downtown Galt, is for sale.

After nearly five years at the corner of Main Street and Ainslie, The Local Eatery is up for sale.

Starting as The Local Option in 2020 and then rebranded to The Local Eatery in 2021, the quaint little cafe has found success in offering cafe-style drinks and food to a busy downtown core.

Ruby Kaler has owned the business since 2021 after taking over from Agnieszka Boekdrukker during the throes of the pandemic.

Kaler said over the past three years they've built a reputation for having great food, good prices and friendly staff.

"We are here in this new business for the last three years and we grew a lot," said Kaler, who aimed to bring cultural diversity to her dishes.

The business located at 69 Main Street is listed on Realtor.ca for $399,000 and is described as a turnkey restaurant fully equipped with 21 seating inside and 15 on a patio.

The listing will add to the growing number of businesses that are leaving the downtown core after Sugar Daddies and The Great Canadian Sox Shop closed earlier this year.

Kaler lives in Woodstock and said the travel distance to the shop in Cambridge is too far. She also thinks her family might be moving to Elmira where they will be opening up another restaurant and bringing some of what she's offered in Cambridge with them.

The Local Eatery recently introduced one of the Indian owner's favourite meals, a butter chicken dish that they serve on the weekends.

Kaler said she's sad to go, but is grateful for her time in Cambridge and being in a beautiful part of town.

Located on lower Main, the restaurant was able to take advantage of the summer street closure by setting up outside and expanding its seating capacity.

Although her business is pulling up stakes, Kaler is supportive of the idea to close lower Main Street permanently, a proposal city staff has been tasked with investigating over the next few months.

"It's a really nice area. We got so many customers in the summer due to the road closure. We got so many visitors," she said.
